New Poetry by Finlay Gilbert

A Joke

I sit on the silence that I can’t bare

The space between us, thick with want,

I start for a moment, then sit back down,

to see a flash in your eyes

I let out a laugh, could be a scream or a cry.

And you hit me quick at the time

I gave you a warning, but I know you’ll make it a joke in the morning

The boy, painted in blue, you put walls up

And wound me up in a suit

I try to keep close, or lead you astray

I even try to think of you in a different way

My boys now painted in red,

From the blood that danced fast to his head

Now, behind my eyelids it’s void and black,

Because all you let me see, is all that I have,

When You look at me is that all I am?

Now, you look back in my eyes

And I know it’s a joke you’ll get late at night
